Guangdong, China's leading economic province, will convene the fifth session of the 14th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress from January 26 to 29 in Guangzhou, provincial authorities announced at a press conference on January 20.

Guangdong has ranked first nationwide in GDP for 36 consecutive years and has led China in total imports and exports for 39 years. The annual session of the provincial people's congress, the local organ of state power, provides both domestic and international observers with a key insight into the province's policy direction and development priorities.

This year's session comes at a pivotal moment, as China concludes its 14th Five-Year Plan and prepares to launch the 15th. The new plan will serve as a comprehensive blueprint for the country's economic and social development over the next five years, outlining goals, strategies, and priorities that officials deem essential for advancing China's broader modernization drive.

According to the proposed agenda, deputies will deliberate the provincial government work report, review the draft of Guangdong's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), and examine the implementation of the province's annual plan on economic and social development for 2025, along with the draft plan for 2026.

Reflecting sustained international interest in the province's economic trajectory, 78 officials from 51 consulates general in Guangzhou have been invited to observe the plenary sessions.
