From bamboo forests to green industry: Zhaoqing develops low-carbon economy

In Guangning County, Zhaoqing City, Guangdong province, bamboo has become a key driver of green growth, generating an industry output value of more than 6 billion yuan. Known as "China's Bamboo Hometown," the county has a forest coverage rate of over 82% and about 72,000 hectares of bamboo forests, the largest area in the province.

Local authorities are turning these natural resources into economic value. In 2024, 107 villages took part in forestry carbon credit trading, generating more than 5 million yuan by selling carbon offsets and boosting villagers' incomes.

At the same time, Guangning is expanding bamboo manufacturing as countries around the world tighten limits on plastic use. The county now has 377 bamboo-processing companies, producing items such as tableware, building materials, handicrafts, and bamboo-based alternatives to plastic and steel. Products are exported to over 30 countries and regions.

In 2025, Guangning launched a three-year plan to promote the bamboo industry, aiming to exceed 10 billion yuan in output by 2027, transitioning from raw materials to a full green supply chain.
