China set for major warm-up, sunshine returns across most regions

Starting today, most parts of China will experience a successful "recharge" of sunshine, with temperatures gradually rising. This stretch of good weather makes it perfect for washing and drying clothes, as well as outdoor activities, but don't be too quick to put away your winter clothes.

Sunny and dry in the coming days

March is typically a season of unstable weather in southern China, with warm, humid air clashing with lingering cold air, often bringing fog, rainstorms, and even hailstorms—along with an increase in insects. However, this time, persistent northerly winds are bringing sunny and dry weather to the region.

As March transitions into late spring, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and southern Shanxi may officially enter spring, while Xuwen County in Guangdong may even enter summer!

Between March 19 and 24, most parts of China will see a significant rise in temperatures, with areas experiencing highs of 20-25°C expanding quickly. In Guangzhou, temperatures may hit 30°C for the first time this year.

From March 21 to 22, as the influence of cold air weakens, most of Guangdong will experience clear skies and rising temperatures. Some cities and counties may see light fog in the morning and evening.

March 21 will be clear to partly cloudy. Some areas in western Guangdong may have light fog in the morning and evening. Morning low temperatures: 7-10°C in northern Guangdong, eastern Guangdong, and northern Pearl River Delta; 13-16°C on the Leizhou Peninsula; 10-13°C in other areas.
March 22 will be clear to partly cloudy, with light fog possible in most areas in the morning and evening. Morning low temperatures: 9-12°C in northern Guangdong, eastern Guangdong, and northern Pearl River Delta; 15-18°C on the Leizhou Peninsula; 12-15°C in other areas.

From March 23 to 24, stable weather conditions will continue, with some areas experiencing light morning and evening fog.

The warming trend will be slow and steady, with temperatures rising by 2-5°C per day. Plenty of sunshine and a dry feel, with no "southern dampness" (回南天)—no excessive humidity, no musty odors, and no condensation issues.

Beware of a late-March cold front

While light clothing is needed for the warm weather, don't store away winter clothes just yet. Around March 26, cold air might approach China again, and stronger warm, humid air will move in—setting the stage for a major clash between hot and cold air masses. This could lead to dramatic temperature swings, strong winds, and heavy rain or even snow.

Historically, cold air remains active before the Qingming Festival (early April), after which temperatures stabilize.

Dressing tips for spring

The elderly, children, and those with weaker immune systems should take extra precautions against early morning and nighttime temperature drops. You may consider dressing like an onion: soft, breathable, sweat-wicking cotton clothing as the inner layer, warm sweaters or sweatshirts for the second layer, and windproof and waterproof jackets such as windbreakers, raincoats, or softshell jackets for the third layer.

Stay prepared and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts! 🌞
