From Fenggang to the world: Building bridges through diaspora ties

On October 26, the Fenggang International Communication Base for Hakka Diaspora Culture was officially launched through a partnership between Fenggang Town and the Dongguan branch of Nanfang Media Group. Dedicated Fenggang sections also went live on the same day under the Dongguan channels of the South app and the South English website. The launch marks a significant step in Fenggang's transition from regional outreach to international communication, opening a new chapter in sharing its distinctive Hakka diaspora culture with the world.

As China prepares to host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shenzhen in November, and the event is capturing global attention. Against this backdrop, Fenggang Town in Dongguan borders Shenzhen's Longgang, Henggang, Pinghu, and Guanlan districts to the east, south, and west, and is just a 10-minute journey from the core area of Shenzhen's Longgang—is stepping into the international spotlight.

Fenggang has an extensive diaspora network, connecting more than 30,000 overseas Chinese across 36 countries and regions. It was the first town in China to champion the concept of Hakka diaspora culture and has hosted seven editions of the Hakka Diaspora Cultural Festival.

In 2016, 72 overseas Chinese chess players gathered in Fenggang.

The newly launched Fenggang channels will focus on three editorial pillars.

"Fenggang through an APEC lens" will explore the stories of Fenggang's overseas Chinese communities across APEC member economies, as well as the growing economic and trade ties between local enterprises and Asia-Pacific markets.

"Longfeng New Area: Shenzhen-Dongguan integration" will showcase Fenggang's industrial upgrading and urban transformation through an international lens, highlighting its emerging role as a Shenzhen-integrated subcenter for smart innovation.

"Fenggang through diaspora eyes" will build on the town's distinctive Hakka diaspora identity, sharing Fenggang's development through the perspectives and voices of overseas Chinese communities.

Throughout the year, the channels will produce English and traditional Chinese stories on major developments in Fenggang, along with dedicated short-video series.

With its diaspora as a bridge, Fenggang is connecting with the world. More than a new communication platform, the Fenggang channels open another avenue for this historic hometown of overseas Chinese to engage with the global community.
