On May 28, SAIC Motor announced it had delivered its 100-millionth vehicle, making it the first Chinese automaker to surpass 100 million units in cumulative production and sales. The milestone unit, an IM LS9 Hyper extended-range SUV from its EV subsidiary IM Motors, was handed over to Cao Xudong, CEO of autonomous-driving firm Momenta.
The 100-million mark places SAIC among a narrow circle previously occupied only by automakers from the United States, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. The group traces its industrial roots to a local parts maker established in 1955 and entered a joint venture with Volkswagen in the 1980s. Since then, it has built a footprint across more than 170 countries and regions, with cumulative overseas deliveries exceeding 7 million units.
