Nobel laureate hails Yangjiang's push for offshore wind-powered hydrogen production from seawater

The Green Energy Industry Science and Technology Innovation Sub-Forum of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2026 and the Greater Bay Area Green Energy Conference took place on Hailing Island in Yangjiang from October 16 to October 17. Benjamin List, a 2021 Nobel laureate in chemistry and a director at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Germany, attended the event.

This marked List's first visit to Yangjiang, where he attended the inaugural Greater Bay Area Green Energy Conference. As a Nobel laureate, he has long pursued cutting-edge research in green chemistry, including asymmetric organocatalysis, small-molecule organocatalysis and carbon dioxide valorization.

In an interview on the afternoon of October 16, List praised Yangjiang's efforts to develop an industry integrating offshore wind power with hydrogen production from seawater. List said green hydrogen is seen as the future of the chemical industry and could indeed be used to make everything, although it remains relatively expensive, at least in Europe. He therefore viewed Yangjiang's efforts as a major step forward.
