Asia's longest V-shaped continuous girder bridge completes closure on Eastern Guangdong Intercity Railway

The main span of the (98+180+98)-meter V-shaped continuous girder bridge on the Chaoshan Station-Chaoshan Airport Viaduct of the Eastern Guangdong Intercity Railway completed closure on May 30 after the final cubic meter of concrete was poured.

With a main span of 180 meters and a total length of 376 meters, the bridge crosses the busy Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway. It is the longest V-shaped continuous girder bridge of its kind in Asia. The bridge deck is 11.2 meters wide.

The approximately 6,116-meter viaduct is a key control project along the railway. The closure section of the main span measured 2 meters in length and 11.2 meters in width and required 48 cubic meters of concrete.

To ensure precision and structural safety, the construction team from China Railway No. 4 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. carried out the closure work in the early morning, when temperatures were at their lowest and the girder was most stable. The team also followed a sequential closure process, closing the side spans before the main span, used intelligent total stations and automated monitoring platforms for millimeter-level deformation control, and applied optimized concrete mixes with cooling pipes to prevent early cracking.

The Eastern Guangdong Intercity Railway is a key part of the regional intercity railway network, connecting major transport hubs including Shantou, Chaoshan, and Jieyang stations, as well as Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport. The line will pass through the central urban areas of Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang.

Once completed, the railway will create a "30-minute commuting circle" among the three cities and strengthen connectivity between eastern Guangdong, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and nearby regions such as Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, and southern Jiangxi. The project is expected to significantly boost regional integration and high-quality development in eastern Guangdong.
