The first strong cold wave of the year is forecasted to impact Guangdong from Major Cold (January 20), the last of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. The temperatures are expected to drop sharply by up to 9-13℃, according to the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory.
The lowest temperatures are anticipated in the morning of January 24, with the possibility of reaching in the western and northern areas. Guangzhou is expected to see a low of 6℃.
The cold snap is predicted to last longer compared to the one in December last year, bringing more clouds, light rain, and bleak weather, as stated in the forecast.

From January 20 to 24, temperatures will gradually decrease from north to south. Mountainous areas in northern Guangdong may experience freezing rain or light snow, while frosts are expected in the central and northern parts.
On January 20, the cold front will first sweep through northern and central Guangdong. It will start to affect Guangzhou in the afternoon and arrive in the southern coastal areas by night. From January 20 to 21, local temperatures will drop by 5-7℃. On January 22 and 23, temperatures will continue to drop by 4-6℃ with scattered rain.
Detailed weather forecast
On January 19, Qingyuan, Shaoguan and Zhaoqing will be cloudy to overcast with light to moderate rain. Eastern coastal areas will have scattered light rain. The rest of the province will be cloudy. Lows: 12 to 16℃ in eastern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta, 18 to 23℃ near the Pearl River estuary and western Guangdong, and 16 to 18℃ in the remaining areas.
On January 20 and 21, Shaoguan and Qingyuan will see light-to-moderate rain and cloudy skies, while the remaining areas will experience scattered light rain to cloudy skies. Lows: 5 to 9℃ in northern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta, 1 to 3℃ in mountainous areas, 14 to 18℃ in Zhanjiang and Maoming, and 9 to 14℃ in the remaining areas.

On January 22 and 23, central and western areas will be overcast to cloudy with light rain. Lows: 1 to 6℃ in northern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta, 1 to 3℃ in mountainous areas, 8 to 11℃ in southern coastal areas, and 6 to 8℃ in the remaining areas.
On January 24 and 25, cloudy skies with frost are expected in most parts of Guangdong. Lows: -1 to 2℃ in northern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta, -5 to -2℃ in mountainous areas, 7 to 10℃ in southern coastal areas, and 3 to 7℃ in the remaining areas.
