September 23 marks the Autumn Equinox, one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese calendar and the midpoint of autumn.
Autumn is an ideal season for drying and preserving harvested crops. In Jiangmen, southern China's Guangdong Province, citrus peels are spread out in the sun to make aged tangerine peel, or chenpi, a traditional ingredient used in Chinese cooking and herbal medicine.
The 24 solar terms divide the traditional Chinese year according to seasonal changes and the sun's position. After the Autumn Equinox, the sun's direct rays move southward, bringing shorter days and longer nights to the Northern Hemisphere.
