Blind mooncake taste test: Mid-Autumn Festival special

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar, when the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest. The festival is a time for family reunions, moon gazing, and enjoying mooncakes, the round pastries that symbolize togetherness and good fortune. This year, the festival falls on October 6 on the Gregorian calendar.

As one of the festival's "must-eat" treats, mooncakes in China today come in many flavors. They're no longer limited to traditional fillings like lotus seed paste with salted egg yolk or red bean. Modern options now include chocolate, coffee, and various fruits.

To celebrate, South reporter Liz and her friend Agnes, a Brazilian vlogger who has been in China for just a year and is still discovering many local mooncake flavors while studying at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, are conducting a blind mooncake taste test!

Who can guess the true flavor behind each bite? And what do they actually taste like? Let's find out!
