Guangdong officials are calling the province's recent anti-drug trafficking campaign a success as it has once again topped the nation in drug-control metrics, cementing that position for the third consecutive year.
According to a statement released by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Public Security on Monday, the province ranks first nationwide across all key performance indicators for anti-drug work, including the number of solved drug crime cases, detained suspects, and investigated drug users.
The province's incidents involving drugs and related crimes have dropped by 83 percent and 67 percent, respectively, over the past two years, the statement said.
Guangdong police have launched 27 rounds of clustered large-scale operations under the "Root Eradication" campaign since 2025, taking action against 674 drug trafficking gangs, with multiple cross-provincial drug-making dens traced and destroyed. Targeted and intensive crackdowns have also been carried out against illegal and criminal activities involving new psychoactive substances, including etomidate.
In the early hours of April 26, Guangdong police detained five suspected drug traffickers and seized 735 kilograms of cannabis when they intercepted a smuggling vessel in a special offshore operation. The mission dismantled a drug smuggling route stretching from Southeast Asia via the South China Sea to overseas destinations.
In another special operation simultaneously launched in Guangdong and Hong Kong in April, police detained six suspects and seized 21.3 kilograms of cocaine, dismantling a drug smuggling route that ran from Africa via Guangzhou as a transit hub to Hong Kong.
Additionally, Guangzhou and Shenzhen have joined Foshan and Zhongshan to be honored as national model cities for drug control, the statement said.
