Warning! Neck fans linked to facial paralysis risk

As the heatwave continues, portable neck fans have gained popularity. However, a recent incident in Nanning, Guangxi, where a 7-year-old boy developed facial paralysis after sleeping with a neck fan on, has raised alarm. Doctors warn that prolonged exposure to a fan blowing directly at the face or neck can disrupt the flow of blood, increasing the risk of facial paralysis, especially in children and the elderly.

Furthermore, neck fans come with several safety concerns:

• Design flaws: Some products are made from rough materials with wide gaps in the fan guard, which can easily cause scratches or pull in hair, damaging the scalp.

• Fire risk: Low-cost products may use inferior lithium batteries, posing a risk of explosion or fire.

• Safety concerns: The cartoon-like appearance of some fans attracts children, who may mistake them for toys, leading to potential finger injuries if mishandled.

To avoid the aforementioned issues, experts offer the following tips for correctly purchasing and using neck fans:

• Buy from reputable sources to ensure product quality.

• Check the surface of the product and fan guard gaps to avoid safety hazards.

• Follow the user manual, and immediately disconnect the power in case of any abnormalities.

• Limit usage time to avoid prolonged direct blowing on the face and neck.

• Keep the fan dry to prevent short circuits caused by water or metal objects entering.

• Use the original charger to avoid problems from using unapproved charging devices.

• Place the fan out of children’s reach.

In conclusion, while enjoying the cool breeze, it is crucial to pay attention to safety to prevent health issues such as facial paralysis.
