New children's hospital to open in 2026

The highly anticipated 3rd Children's Hospital of Shenzhen — set to open in the first half of 2026 in Longgang District — is expected to help address the shortage of children's hospital beds in eastern Shenzhen.

Positioned as a city-level hospital and a demonstration of modern hospital management, it will be managed and operated by Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital.

The hospital will integrate medical care, education, research, and rehabilitation. Located at the intersection of Xielian Road and Qingyou Road in Longgang District, the facility covers an area of 35,300 square meters and is planned to have 500 beds.

Notably, it will feature an ocean-themed design aimed at creating a child-friendly environment to minimize the psychological pressure children experience when visiting medical facilities.

This initiative is another example of Shenzhen's commitment to building a child-friendly city in China since the end of 2015 when the plan was implemented.

In 2022, Shenzhen released guidelines for constructing a child-friendly public service system — the first local standards in China for developing a child-friendly city.

According to the Shenzhen Women's Federation, the guidelines have embodied the city's experience in prioritizing child care and child-friendly public services. Building on this foundation, the city has developed comprehensive local standards that cover child-friendly public services and their supporting facilities.

The guidelines focus on children's needs and aim to promote healthy and happy development. They establish a framework for a child-friendly public service system that is organized into eight subsystems, including health, education, recreation and sports, play, travel, community and family, social security, and legal protection.
