Cathay Pacific has announced the launch of a new direct route between Hong Kong and Urumqi, set to commence on April 28 with four weekly flights. The addition of Urumqi brings the airline group‘s total number of passenger destinations in the Chinese mainland to 20.
Together with its low-cost Hong Kong Express Airways, Cathay Pacific will operate over 290 weekly flights between Hong Kong and cities across the Chinese mainland this summer. These include major hubs such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, as well as destinations like Wuhan, Xiamen, and now Urumqi.
Lavender Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer of Cathay Pacific, described the new route as a significant step in connecting Hong Kong with the northwest region of China. She highlighted that Urumqi marks the airline’s 11th new destination worldwide revealed this year, bringing it closer to its goal of serving 100 destinations globally by 2025.
The new service will be operated using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, offering both business and economy-class cabins.
Beyond Urumqi, Cathay Pacific is expanding its global reach with several new routes in the coming months. March will see the launch of direct flights to Hyderabad, followed by Dallas in April, Rome and Munich in June, and Brussels in August. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Express Airways continues to grow its regional footprint, adding flights to destinations such as Nha Trang, Ishigaki, and Komatsu, with Miyako (Shimojishima) joining the network in June.
