Dongguan's Songshan Lake develops "skin" for robots

Located in the innovative hub of Songshan Lake, Dongguan, MoXian Technology (Dongguan) Co., Ltd. has unveiled a groundbreaking electronic skin technology that allows robots to "feel" their environment. This advancement has led to a tenfold increase in orders for their humanoid robotic hands compared to last year, according to its marketing director, Wang Xin.

China is rapidly becoming a global leader in humanoid robot production, with the market projected to reach approximately 2.76 billion yuan in 2024, potentially expanding into a trillion-yuan market by 2030. Experts suggest that 2025 could mark a turning point for mass production in the industry.

MoXian's technology features a robotic hand equipped with 100 sensing points per finger, providing high sensitivity that closely mimics the human touch. This electronic skin covers the entire hand, including the palm and joints, significantly enhancing the robot's ability to detect shapes and pressure. Made from a special silicone material, it integrates seamlessly with robotic structures, offering comprehensive tactile feedback.

In January 2025, MoXian partnered with Pudu Robotics to incorporate its pressure sensor technology into the PUDU D9 humanoid robot, improving adaptability and precision in complex environments. This collaboration broadens possibilities for applications in healthcare, industry, and service sectors, enhancing surgical assistance, precision assembly, and personalized service.

The technology also improves robot safety by enhancing obstacle navigation. Several leading firms have already adopted MoXian's electronic skin, with more custom solutions in development.

MoXian's electronic skin, with a thickness of just 0.2 mm and a minimal triggering force of 5 grams, highlights the company's commitment to affordability and innovation. The resources at the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory have facilitated the rapid development of these cost-effective solutions. As demand for customization rises, MoXian aims to expand its applications in smart devices and medical rehabilitation, positioning itself at the forefront of the evolving robotics landscape.
