China on Tuesday began construction of a massive ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission line that will carry clean energy from the Xizang Autonomous Region in southwest China across thousands of kilometers to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in southern China.
With a total investment of about 7.5 billion U.S. dollars, the project will deliver more than 43 billion kWh of clean electricity annually from the clean energy base in southeastern Xizang to the Greater Bay Area when completed in 2029.
This could be one of the biggest landmarks in China's energy story. What's special about ultra-high voltage technology? Why does this project matter? In this episode of News Xplained, we'll look for the answers.
