Yangshao culture draws global audience to unlock Chinese civilization in Shenzhen

On June 21, a lecture in Shenzhen's Bao'an District spotlighted the foundational role of the Yangshao culture in early Chinese civilization and archaeology. Held as part of the Bao'an Forum on Tracing the Origins of Chinese Civilization, the event drew a diverse audience—including international attendees—and attracted over 43,000 online viewers.

Wei Xingtao, Deputy Director of the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, delivered a keynote titled "The Chinese Key: Yangshao Culture in the Exploration of Civilization's Origins." Drawing on extensive archaeological evidence, Wei traced the culture's development from 7000 to 4700 years ago, highlighting its vast influence across China's heartland.

Wei outlined three key phases of Yangshao's evolution—from early Neolithic roots and the emergence of agriculture to the rise of proto-states like the "Zhudingyuan Ancient State" and mature societies such as those found at Shuanghuaishu and Nanzuo. These sites, he argued, meet essential markers of early civilization: social hierarchy, centralized power, and cultural sophistication.

The lecture also sparked lively international engagement. Using translation apps, attendees like U.S. financier Mark and French artist Michel Bertrand participated in the Q&A. Wei addressed questions about the origins of Chinese painted pottery, the significance of monumental architecture, and even humorous inquiries about ancient "alien artifacts."

After the talk, nearly 50 participants joined a hands-on activity recreating Yangshao pottery motifs. Now in its fourth year, the Bao'an Forum—organized by the Bao'an Public Culture and Sports Service Center under the guidance of the China National Cultural Heritage Administration—continues to serve as a key platform for promoting Chinese cultural heritage in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
