China Xplained | How China's smartphone factories wow global journalists

More than 100 global media outlets and influencers got an inside look at Shenzhen's advanced manufacturing on August 13, as the city marked the 100-day countdown to the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

The event brought together representatives from 136 media organizations, as well as influencers from APEC economies, to explore the technologies and industrial ecosystem behind one of China's leading innovation hubs.

During a visit to smartphone maker Honor, journalists toured an automated production line, following the manufacturing process from circuit boards and component mounting to final assembly and quality control.

They also visited testing laboratories where smartphones undergo rigorous trials involving water resistance, thermal tolerance, impact resistance and signal performance.

"The amount of validation and testing... is really outstanding work," said Malik Saadi, chief research officer at ABI Research from the UK.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said what impressed him went beyond a single company.

"You can see the innovation everywhere," he said, pointing to Shenzhen's broader supply chain, startups and investment in emerging technologies such as AI.

The tour comes as Shenzhen prepares to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in November. China has identified openness, innovation and cooperation as the three priorities for APEC 2026.
