Unified national standard set for medical lab pricing

China's National Healthcare Security Administration has issued trial guidelines for medical laboratory service pricing. This release completes a comprehensive 40-batch rollout, marking the basic establishment of a unified, standardized nationwide system for healthcare billing.

The guidelines cover major areas including clinical testing, blood transfusion and blood typing, microbiology and parasitology, molecular diagnostics, biochemistry and immunology. They contain 662 primary items, 114 surcharge items and seven extension items.

Pricing focuses on service outcomes rather than testing methods to eliminate arbitrary price gaps. Billing units are unified for clearer, simpler charging.

An NHSA official said that nationwide standardization will drive high-quality development in laboratory medicine while facilitating the mutual recognition of test results across regions and healthcare providers.

Blueprint released for weather warning system

The China Meteorological Administration and the National Development and Reform Commission have issued a joint plan for the development of the national comprehensive meteorological observation system during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period.

The roadmap aims to modernize the country's meteorological science, technology and public services through integrated multi-domain coverage, broadened scope and utility, and enhanced resource coordination.

The plan stresses accelerating the development of a modern comprehensive meteorological observation system that integrates land, sea, air and space, promotes coordination across sectors, and operates intelligently, efficiently and precisely.

$200b target set for emergency equipment

China has unveiled a new five-year plan to rapidly modernize its safety and emergency equipment sector, aiming for output in key areas to hit 1.4 trillion yuan ($206 billion) by 2030. Jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Emergency Management, the strategy centers on cultivating market-leading enterprises to drive the nation's response capabilities.

The plan aims to significantly raise the industry's scale, technological capabilities, product quality and application levels over the next five years.

China's safety and emergency equipment industry has grown rapidly in recent years, with output in key areas surpassing 1 trillion yuan in 2025.

New technologies and equipment have been increasingly deployed in front-line rescue and relief operations. During this year's flood season, drones and satellite communications systems were used to detect risks at dams and ensure communications during emergencies, making flood control and disaster response more precise and efficient.
