A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Liunan District in Liuzhou, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, at 0:21 a.m. on May 18. As of 8:14 a.m. on May 18, two people were confirmed dead and one remained missing, according to local authorities.

The quake had a depth of 8 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. Another 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit the district at 7:41 a.m. the same day, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Residents in several Guangdong cities, including Shenzhen, Foshan, and Maoming, reported feeling slight tremors following the earthquake.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management and the office of the State Council earthquake relief headquarters activated a Level-IV emergency response and dispatched a work team to the affected area to guide rescue and disaster relief operations.

Fire and rescue teams, armed police officers, and militia personnel have been deployed to the quake-hit area to assist in search and rescue operations.
