Guangdong developes world's first eye drops to reverse cataracts

"To address the needs of early-stage cataract patients, we developed the world's first eye drops that can reverse cataracts," said Lin Haotian, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) at Sun Yat-sen University.

The breakthrough was announced at a press conference on Guangdong's new quality productive forces in health, hosted by the Information Office of the Guangdong Provincial Government on September 10.

Lin explained that the formulation works by inhibiting lens protein denaturation, which helps slow or even reverse the progression of cataracts.

In addition, for glaucoma, ZOC has independently developed a new anti-glaucoma drug that has now entered the clinical trial phase.

To address the diagnostic challenge of infants being unable to express symptoms, the world's first smartphone-based visual function screening system for infants can intelligently identify visual impairments caused by over 16 common blinding eye diseases by analyzing just a three-minute video of an infant's gaze captured via mobile phone. The system boasts an average screening accuracy rate of over 85%.

While serving the domestic population, ZOC upholds the vision of a global community of health for all, extending China's solutions to benefit global eye health efforts.

Lin stated, "We have brought smart diagnosis systems through the Brightness Journey foreign aid medical program to Belt and Road partner countries like the Maldives, enabling local residents to access intelligent remote services from Chinese experts."

On September 3, the Xinjiang Branch of Sun Yat-sen University International Ophthalmic Center was inaugurated, dedicated to promoting the application and transformation of new quality productive forces, such as ophthalmic AI and 5G remote diagnosis, in border regions and friendly hospitals in Central Asia.
