The Shenzhen section of the Guangshen Yanjiang Expressway, the second expressway connecting Shenzhen and Guangzhou, will open to traffic in October 2012.

The new eight-lane expressway along Shenzhen’s western coast is expected to ease traffic pressure on the existing Guangshen (Guangzhou-Shenzhen) Expressway. Upon completion, travel time between Shenzhen and Guangzhou will be reduced to one hour. The maximum speed for the new freeway will be 100 kph. The limit on the Guangshen Expressway is 120 kph.

The Guangshen Expressway, opening to traffic in 1994, is 122 km long, while the new freeway will be 89 km long.

The Dongguan section of the expressway is scheduled to open at the same time as the Shenzhen section.

The 30 km Shenzhen section starts at Yueliangwan Thoroughfare in Nanshan District, stretching through Xin’an, Xixiang, Fuyong and Shajing subdistricts in Bao'an and Dongguan and ends at Huangpu Thoroughfare in Huangpu District, Guangzhou.

Work on the Shenzhen section, 99.7 percent of which is comprised of bridges, started in March. The section will cost 11.2 billion RMB (1.64 billion USD) to build. By October, nearly 2 billion RMB had been spent on the project.
