When we think about borders, we often picture walls, fences, and restrictions. But here, at the China–Myanmar border in Ruili, I saw something different—something hopeful and powerful.
Every day, Burmese residents cross into China not for escape or tourism, but for life. They come with a Border Resident Card, just to buy daily essentials like rice, meat, and tissues, and sometimes even to receive medical care.
And then I witnessed something I'll never forget: an ambulance from China delivering a Burmese patient back to the border, where another ambulance from Myanmar was waiting. No headlines. No politics. Just two teams working together to help someone heal.
This is the other side of a border—a side filled with connection and mutual care.
