Air India flight to London crashes after takeoff with 242 on board

An Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad Airport on June 12, marking the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 aircraft.

Flight AI171, operated by an 11.4-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed from Ahmedabad in the western Indian state of Gujarat at 13:38 local time en route to London Gatwick Airport.

According to Air India, the aircraft was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board. There have been no reports of casualties  or the cause of the crash so far.

Among those on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals. The injured are being transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline — 1800 5691 444 — to provide assistance and information to families and stated that it is fully cooperating with authorities investigating the incident.

This crash is the first known fatal accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since the aircraft entered commercial service in 2011.
