A large-scale original stage drama titled The Fate of Agarwood (沉香缘) recently launched its tour across Dianbai District in Maoming City, Guangdong Province, inviting audiences to embark on a journey through a millennium of local history.
Premiering in Guanzhu Town and Qijing Town, the production—honored with the 2024 "Performing Guangdong" Award for Best Original Project—drew massive crowds and earned rave reviews.
Dianbai's agarwood culture, dating back to the Sui and Tang dynasties, intertwines with the legacies of Madame Xian—a revered regional heroine—and the Danjia folk traditions (meaning aquatic community), forming a rich cultural tapestry.
Centered on Dianbai's agarwood heritage, the four-act drama bridges past and present. It unfolds through themes of Madame Xian's patriotism, Yang Guifei's nostalgic moonlit reverie, and the fusion of ancient and contemporary cultures, creating a stage spectacle that blends national elegance, romance, and artistic beauty.
As a public welfare cultural initiative, The Fate of Agarwood will tour multiple towns and neighboring regions in Dianbai, offering free performances to promote cultural heritage preservation and enhance cultural tourism.
