Where to get a real bargain of seafood in Guangzhou?

Starting from noon of August 16, the 19th seasonal fishing moratorium officially ends in South China Sea, welcoming a new fishing season. Hundreds of thousands of fishermen restart fishing in South China Sea.

Cut-in: What is fishing moratorium?

This year’s seasonal fishing moratorium began from May 1 to Aug. 16 in the South China Sea. The 3.5-month-long fishing moratorium is the longest-ever since the fishing bans in the South China Sea began in 1999. No fishing is allowed in parts of the sea under China’s jurisdiction except by single-layer gill nets or other approved methods, including conventional angling. Although they have reduced the income of some fishermen, bans protect fisheries and ensure the industry’s sustainability.

Back to business: This year’s fishing moratorium has come to an end, it means a wide variety of fresh seafood from the South China Sea has been shipped to the market. Aren’t you excited?

Abalone, Geo-duck, shrimp, crab, clam, fish, lobster, mantis shrimp, oyster, horn snail, mussel, cuttlefish, squid, octopus, scallop, cockle, crayfish, jumbo shrimp, razor-shell, tuna, salmon ...

Wait a minute! We bet you know all these. But do you know where to get a real bargain of fresh seafood in Guangzhou? Huangsha Aquatic Product Market is the most famous one, and several other aquatic product markets are also highly recommendable.

No. 1: Huangsha Aquatic Product Market (黄沙水产交易市场)

Speaking of aquatic product market in Guangzhou, we believe most people think of Huangsha Aquatic Product Market first.

Huangsha Aquatic Product Market, as one of the largest of its kind in China, covers an area of nearly 30 thousand square meters with the Pearl River as part of the trading area. Here you can enjoy shopping, sightseeing, seafood feast and entertaining.

Highlights:

1. Great variety. As the biggest aquatic product market in South China so far, there is no doubt that you can find almost all kinds of seafood at Huangsha Aquatic Product Market.

2. Fresh. “Fresh aquatic food” has always been the name card of Huangsha Aquatic Product Market.

3. Reasonable price. You can buy seafood from the market and have it cooked by restaurants nearby, which is much cheaper than ordering seafood in a restaurant.

4. Good location. Huangsha Aquatic Product Market is very close to downtown Guangzhou. The seafood you buy here will still be fresh when being taken home.

No. 2: Hai Bao Wan Aquatic Product Market (海宝湾水产交易市场)

The second market we would like to introduce is Hai Bao Wan Aquatic Product Market.

Highlights:

1. Not crowded. Compared with Huangsha, Hai Bao Wan is relatively far from downtown Guangzhou, and less people have heard of it, therefore not so many people come to buy seafood here. As a result, you don’t have to queue up for buying or eating seafood, and there is a lot of parking space.

2. Inexpensive. Since there is sufficient supply of seafood and not so many customers, the price of seafood here is reasonable. Compared with having seafood feast in downtown, you can save up to two third of the cost if you buy seafood at Hai Bao Wan and cook it at nearby restaurants.

No. 3: 14 Chung Aquatic Product Center (十四涌水产中心)

14 Chung Aquatic Product Center is one of the famous aquatic product markets in Guangzhou. It is located at the Pearl River estuary, between Wanqingsha Town and Minzhong Town in Nansha District, featuring crowded seafood stalls and small restaurants. It is kind of like a new world for seafood lovers, with marine food products, dried seafood, vegetables, fruits, aquatic products and eateries.

Highlights:

1. Fresh. Seafood here is provided by local fishermen who catch fish with their small fishing boats everyday.

2. Inexpensive. 14 Chung is not as famous as 19 Chung (to be mentioned below), however just because of that, seafood here is cheap and affordable. Therefore, many local Guangzhou people prefer to purchase seafood here.

3. Great variety. Shellfish seafood such as abalone and scallop is strongly recommended for it is cheap and fresh. An abalone only costs less than 10 yuan while a sea urchin only costs less than 20 yuan.

4. Affordable seafood restaurants. It is recommended to walk around the market to compare prices and ingredients, then shop what you want and pick a restaurant for cooking the seafood. The cooking cost is less than 20 yuan per person.

5. All kinds of fruits. 14 Chung offers not only fresh and inexpensive seafood, but also various fruits, including local red banana and pawpaw.

No. 4: 19 Chung Aquatic Product Wharf (十九涌水产品交易码头)

After 14 Chung, we have to mention 19 Chung. Located in the southernmost point of Guangzhou, 19 Chung is hailed as “South Tip of Guangzhou”. There is ample seafood as well as many interesting places for visiting.

You can buy fresh and dried seafood at the 19 Chung Aquatic Product Wharf. More importantly, here you can take a sightseeing boat to travel around offshore.

Compared with 14 Chung, seafood in 19 Chung is a little bit expensive, but as a tourist attraction, it’s worth visiting during weekends.

Long road along the coast, gentle sea breeze, rhythmic wave sound, fishing-boats berthed at the sea shore, fruits of the season, seafood street, mini-bars, and visitors taking photos around... You will find your views, delicacies and fun in 19 Chung.
