Shooting underway on Cantonese sitcom featuring local’s stories

A new Cantonese sitcom highlighting the lives of ordinary people in Guangzhou started shooting in Liwan, a district in Guangzhou on the morning of July 6th. Well-known Cantonese crosstalk artist Huang Junying and many other famous local actors will take part in the show.

The 20-episode TV drama ‘Happy Food Stall’ (开心大排档) depicts the daily lives of of the three owners of a local restaurant, their comedic adventures and career related drama and their families & friends in the city.

One of the highlights of the show is the Cantonese crosstalk or ‘Xiangsheng’ performance interwoven into the narrative. Cantonese cuisine also features prominently in the show too.

The filming will mainly take place in Pantan Village in Liwan and will wrap up in September. It is expected to hit the small screen and streaming service at the end of this year.

The sitcom is being produced by the Publicity Department of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and the Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau, and presented by Guangdong Music & Folk Art Troupe.

Synopsis

Huang Niu (Huang Junying), the current owner of a local restaurant ‘Happy Food Stall’ plans to retire on his 70th birthday and select a successor. His son-in-law Chen Pi (Chen Jianxiong) has always believed that he will be the one. To Chen Pi’s surprise, Huang Niu chooses his grandson Huang Buliao (Zeng Guanjie), Chen Pi’s son, as the new boss. Huang Buliao runs the restaurant as if he were playing a game, which leads to a chain of hilarious mishaps, with the father Chen Pi making a spectacle of himself. Gradually Huang Niu gets everyone to see that the aim of running a restaurant is to serve their neighbours, and that cooperation is the key.
