Four people from Shenzhen, including Li Qingquan with Shenzhen University, Wang Chuanfu with BYD Co. Ltd., Yang Qiang with WeBank, and Lo Chung-mau with the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH), have stood as candidates for the membership of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) this year, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

The CAE announced Tuesday that it had selected 531 candidates for membership in 2019. This year’s selection paid special attention to those who have made great achievements and contributions in technological innovation in grass-roots and private enterprises.

The four Shenzhen candidates, two of whom are from enterprises, engage in different fields.

Li, president of Shenzhen University, specializes in geodetic survey and survey engineering. Wang is the founder of BYD and engages in chemical, metallurgical and material engineering management. Yang is an expert in artificial intelligence, and Lo, chief executive of HKU-SZH, is a globally renowned specialist in hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation.

CAE members, called academicians in China, hold the highest title in the field of engineering. It is a lifelong honor. New members are recruited every two years.

This year’s candidates also include Robin Li and Wang Haifeng with China’s top search engine Baidu, and Wang Jian with e-commerce giant Alibaba. The list of the elected members will be published at the end of the year. (Zhang Yu)
