Guangzhou’s expansive subway system may not be China’s longest, but it sure is the busiest, according to a report that was released recently by the China Association of Metros.

If you feel as though you are packed tight in a tin of sardines on Metro Line 1 in the city, there’s a good reason for that too: it is the country’s most congested form of mass transit with the highest passenger volume nationwide.

It is no surprise, therefore, that Tiyu Xilu Station, located in downtown Tianhe District, is China’s busiest metro station with the highest average number of daily passengers, recording a whopping 840,000 trips each day.

At the end of 2018, three new lines opened in the city alone, including Line 14 which is the first subway route connecting Conghua District and Guangzhou’s central areas, meaning the system is almost literally expanding at the speed of light.

Guangzhou’s metro system is China’s third largest, with a total length of 400 kilometers, thanks to more than 87 kilometers of new operational lines. In addition, 58 percent of China’s total metro passenger volume is based in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, and Shanghai.
