Guangzhou University students win global entrepreneurship competition

Two teams from Guangzhou University won silver medals in an international university students' innovation and entrepreneurship competition on Tuesday (November 9).

The finals of the second Urban Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was jointly held by Guangzhou University and Western Sydney University. A total of 12 teams from 7 universities including Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Medical University, Western Sydney University, Tampere University, Durban University of Technology, University of Padua, and University of Coimbra entered the finals after 10 months of rivalry.

The two teams, BriGuardian and Chengan Tunnel Research Center, focused on technology research of individualized robots and the industrialization of complete sets of equipment for subway tunnel safety wisdom perception.

A team from Western Sydney University—CO2 Concrete—took the gold. And three teams, namely, Esperide from the University of Padua, KInteract from the Western Sydney University, Brightlife from the Tampere University, shared third place.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of sister cities between Guangzhou and Sydney. Dr. Geoffrey Lee, Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education of Australia’s New South Wales Government, and Councillor Robert Kok, Lord Mayor Representative of Sydney, delivered speeches at the finals. They congratulated the competitors and expressed that New South Wales and its capital, Sydney, are committed to consolidating and developing friendly relations with Guangdong and its capital, Guangzhou. The two provinces and two cities will further enhance their willingness to exchange and cooperate in the fields of economy, trade, culture, and education.

All universities in this competition come from the Alliance of Guangzhou International Sister-City Universities (GISU). Initiated by Guangzhou University in 2018, GISU aims to provide an international higher education exchange platform for universities located in Guangzhou’s sister cities.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams from China attended the final in Guangzhou, while international teams and foreign judges participated via video link.
