As a new sea-crossing channel in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge is expected to open in 2024. As the west extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the bridge is of great importance to optimize the regional expressway network and expand the benefits of economic growth from the GBA to western Guangdong and the coastal regions. The Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge linking Zhuhai and Jiangmen will be a sea-crossing bridge comprising two navigable span bridges - the Gaolan Port Bridge and the Huangmao Sea Bridge, which are cable-stayed at the height of 700 meters. The whole channel bridge is about 31 kilometers long and adopts a two-way six-lane highway standard. The Gaolan Port Bridge will be a full-floating-system cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 700 meters, single column, and double planes. The Huangmao Sea Bridge will be a trio-tower cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 2x700 meters, single column, and double planes. Upon completion, the Huangmao Sea Bridge will set the longest span for a trio-tower cable-stayed bridge. A rendering of the Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge is shown above.
After completing the construction, the line distance from Zhuhai's Gaolan Port to Jiangmen's Daguang Bay Economic Zone will be 39 kilometers, shortened by 31 kilometers. The project could improve the collection and distribution networks and comprehensive transport systems, bringing the Hengqing Free Trade Zone into more extraordinary play in driving the growth on the west bank of the Pearl River.
The Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Humen Bridge, Huangpu Bridge, Nansha Bridge, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge (under construction), and the proposed Lianhua Mt Channel, is forming a virtual channel in the GBA. It will effectively improve the expressway network in Guangdong province, further strengthen the synergy between Zhuhai Hengqing Free Trade Zone, Zhuhai's Gaolan Port Economic Zone, and Jiangmen's Daguang Bay Economic Zone, and boost the connectivity of infrastructures in the GBA. With a single-column double-plane full-floating-system cable-stayed design, the Gaolan Port Bridge will have a main span of 700 meters across the eastern channel in Huangmao Sea. The single-column concrete tower will adopt a unique design. The total height of buildings will be 248.7 meters, and the maximum clearance will be 64 meters. Cargos of up to 50 tonnes can pass over the bridge. A rendering of the Gaolan Port Bridge is shown above.
On June 6th, 2020, the ground-breaking for the Huangmao Sea Channel Project was held six months ahead of schedule in Chixi town, Taishan city, Jiangmen of Guangdong.
On December 16th, 2020, a signing ceremony for the project's Civil Works Construction Contract was held. On the same day, a mobilization event was held on the construction platform located on the sea and Jiangmen city. Later, a vibratory hammer drove the first pile casting for the central tower, which is 3.3 meters in diameter, 28 meters in height, and 60 tonnes in weight, into the sea, bringing the project into a new phase.
On March 19th, 2021, the construction team started drilling the pile foundation for the Gaolan Port Bridge's central pier.
