In 1989, Liu Qingwei came to the island and served as a forest ranger at the Qi’ao-Dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve since then, mainly responsible for protecting the macaques as well as the ecological environment of the island.
Zhuhai’s Dangan Island is home to a large number of macaques, a national second-class protected wildlife. With the unremitting efforts of the forestry team, they have successfully tamed two groups of macaques named Ashan and Ahai respectively, and the number of macaques on the island has expanded from less than 300 to nearly 3,000. Rare species, such as boa snakes and podocarpus macrophyllus, a rare conifer tree, have also been under protection, so the island sees more inhabitants of various species.
Initially, he didn’t know how to feed the macaques, hence was bitten by their leader, leaving a large scar on his arm. More thrillingly, on one occasion when he was feeding the macaques, he accidentally slipped from a cliff more than 30 meters high and his feet were pierced by branches. Liu Qingwei did not give up due to these setbacks, and instead, he devotes all of himself to safeguarding the macaques and the island.
