The first batch of goods, a total of 66 containers which were loaded with 2,000 tons of grain and forage crops from the Northeast China, was firstly shipped from Yingkou Port (Liaoning Province) to Shantou’s Guang’ao Port, and then sent to the Shantou North Railway Station, from where it would finally be transported, by rail, to Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province.

The combined sea-rail transport allows freights to be transported with more efficiency and lower cost. The launch of this new transport line marks the substantial progress the Guang'ao Port Area of Shantou Port have made in intermodal freight transport, including the innovation of service modes, refining of its channel of collection and distribution and an improved level of customer service.
The hinterland of Shantou Port is mainly the eastern Guangdong, but its coverage can even reach parts of southwestern Fujian and southern Jiangxi. The new sea-rail combined transport line has brought convenience to the inland areas by opening up a channel of sea freight logistics for import and export. With lower cost of logistics and local economic growth, it is very likely to see the interaction between inland cities and the port be more facilitated and become more frequent.
