According to Guangzhou Metro, Metro Line 8 will open the first leg of its northern extension on December 28th, benefitting people living in Liwan and Haizhu districts.

This first phase includes an extension to the existing Fenghuang Xincun (凤凰新村), all new Tongfuxi (同福西) and the addition of an interchange to Culture Park (文化公园). As a result passengers will soon be able to change between Line 8 and Line 6 at Culture Park Station.
Previously, people who travelled between Culture Park(文化公园) and Fenghuang Xincun (凤凰新村) would have to transfer three times via Huangsha (黄沙), Xi Lang (西塱) and Shayuan (沙园) a long ride despite a distance of only 1.8 kilometers between the two places. The new route will enable passengers to travel between two places in less than ten minutes, and is expected to ease congestion on Renmin Bridge.
The north extension of Line 8 includes 15 stations and will open in two phrases. In addition to the first phrase that is about to start operation on Saturday, the second phrase features a further 13 stations and is anticipated to come into operation in 2020. Once the second phrase has completed construction, people will be able to transfer from Line 8 to Line 1 via Chen Clan Academy and to Line 5 via Xicun.
