Nanquan, or southern Chinese martial art, is a classification of Chinese martial arts that originated south of China's Yangtze River. Hung Ga Kuen is one outstanding representative, with Wong Fei-hung, the Cantonese folk hero, a Hung Ga master.

The 84-year-old Wong Tat-sang and his family in Guangzhou inherited Hung Ga Kuen from Wong Fei-hung over four generations and has become a legend in the city.

Wong's family and Hung Ga Kuen could be traced back to the 1920s. His father, Wong Tim, went to Guangzhou to live when he was very young and worked as a rickshaw driver and porter near the pier.

"At that time, people chose to fight rather than persuade. Wharves in Guangzhou were under the control of martial clubs. Therefore, many porters participated in clubs and practiced martial arts." Wong Tat-sang recalled that his dad also practiced Hung Ga Kuen and later became known as a master in an influential club named Zhou's Martial Club.

With excellent martial arts skills and faithfulness to friends, Wong Tim was elected as the chairman and chief coach in the Guangzhou Rickshaw Drivers' Association.

Under his father's influence, Wong Tat-sang practiced Hung Ga Kuen at an early age under Ng Siu-cyun, a student of Lam Sai-wing. With the nickname of 'Chu Juk / Pork Meat Wing,' Lam was one of the most famous students of Wong Fei-hung.

Later, Wong's younger brother Wong Tat-hung and younger sister Wong Juk-zan also follow Ng to practice Hung Ga Kuen. They were all talented and also practiced very hard. In Ng's careful training, three of them gradually became masters of Hung Ga Kuen and won a strong reputation in the city.

The Wong family has contributed a lot to the inheritance of Hung Ga Kuen. Wong Tat-hung is a famous coach with China's first-class certificate and trained dozens of athletes, who were later selected to Guangdong’s Martial Arts Team and have won many championships in national and international competitions. Wong Juk-zan, known as Drum Queen in Lingnan Area, is famous for her lion drum performance.

Wong Tat-sung has devoted himself to inheriting and promoting Hung Ga Kuen globally. In 2006 Wong joined hands with other masters in Hung Ga Kuen and set up the Hung Ga Kuen Club affiliating with the Guangzhou Martial Arts Association. Two years later, Wong established the Hung Ga Kuen Professional Committee of Guangdong Martial Arts Association, aiming to collect and sort our historical materials together with all inheritors and fans at home and aboard.

When talking about the inheritance, Wong Tat-sung emphasized that there are traditions in Hung Ga Kuen and they don’t need to be authentic, only in this way can Hung Ga Kuen be passed down."
