On November 15, 194 new automated external defibrillators (AED) were put into use throughout the metro network of Guangzhou. Combining with the previously installed 119 machines, this means all the city’s subway stations are now equipped with this life-saving device.

As a device for emergency medical service, an AED can help people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest to re-establish an effective heart rhythm. With simple audio and visual commands, it is also designed to be easy to use for even the untrained. Because of the necessity for a timely heart attack response, AED is deemed as one of the most effective first-aid devices to be placed in public areas.

Aiming at elevating Guangzhou’s readiness for first aid and building a charitable city, this batch of new devices was donated by Guangdong Charity Federation, Guangdong Lantai Charity, Red Society of Guangdong province, Red Society of Guangzhou and Guangdong Lantai Development Center.

According to the staff of Guangzhou Metro, for the purpose of management and maintenance of the device, the AED is mainly placed near the control room, but the actual location may vary depending on the conditions and circumstances of each station.

Guangzhou Metro started a series of supporting measures to increase awareness of the devices and to help passengers get access to it, which includes updating the location of each AED on its Guangzhou Metro’s mobile application, putting up relevant public notices and guidance signs, and showing informative videos about AED on the in-train television monitors.

Meanwhile, mainstream GPS navigation applications will also start to upload the position of AEDs to help users in need to find the nearest one.

To ensure a well-ordered operation of AED and maximize the benefit of its broader availability, more than 3,000 employees working at the different subway stations have undergone training about CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and learned how to properly use an AED. In addition to its staff, Guangzhou Metro also attempts to increase the level of first aid knowledge and skills among passengers with its effort in dissemination of relevant information.
