Right after Lionrock, another typhoon Kompasu is edging closer to the coast of Guangdong. It is forecast to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the province from October 12 to 14, according to the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory.

Kompasu was about 720 kilometers southeast of Guangdong at 11:00 a.m. of October 12. Moving west at a speed of 25 km/h, it is predicted to continue strengthening and make landfall in the east coast of Hainan province on October 13 as a strong tropical storm.

As of 3:30 p.m. today, 79 typhoon alerts are in effect in Guangdong. Schools in Shenzhen, Shanwei and Shantou have been suspended today. Guangzhou has issued level-Ⅳ prevention emergency response from October 11 and closed ferry services.

Rainstorms are expected to hit Guangdong starting from tonight. On October 13, there will be torrential downpours in the east, west of Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta, and high winds in the coastal areas of the province.

On October 14, the impact of the typhoon will weaken. The southern part of the Pearl River Delta and the coastal area of west Guangdong will experience heavy rains to showers and the rest of the province will be cloudy with showers.

On October 15, there will be showers, locally heavy rains in the Leizhou peninsula and the Pearl River Delta while the rest of Guangdong will be cloudy. On October 16, a new wave of cold fronts will affect the province and bring cloudy and cool weather.

Safety measures on typhoons

1. Pay attention to weather forecasts and warnings issued by local meteorological agency.

2. Remove items that may easily fall from your balcony or window.

3. Shut the doors and windows tightly. Nail some boards to reinforce them if necessary.

4. Park your cars in safe places.

5. Stock up on living essentials such as food, drugs and lighting instruments or torches.

6. Avoid going outdoors in gales.
