On April 21st, 2020, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Guangdong Committee (“CCPIT Guangdong”) held a meeting with representatives of African businessmen in Guangzhou. At the meeting, Fan Xinlin, vice president of CCPIT Guangdong, explained Guangdong government’s measures and policies taken during the COVID-19 outbreak, and listened to the feedback and opinions from African business community representatives, aiming to build trust and avoid misunderstanding by enhancing mutual communication. Businessmen from Nigeria, Kenya, Benin, Sudan, Somalia, among others, attended the meeting.
According to Mr Fan, CCPIT Guangdong has been working closely with the Consulates General in Guangzhou, concerned about the safety and health of foreign businessmen in Guangzhou, including those in the African business community. Guangdong has implemented undifferentiated health management measures and treats Chinese and foreign residents equally without discrimination. Occasional incidents and misunderstandings have, however, happened in the implementation of those epidemic control and prevention actions. Governments at provincial, municipal and district levels have subsequently acted to ensure issues are handled properly. Local authorities will make more effort to enhance mutual understanding.
Nigerian businessman Gabriel has been engaged in the wholesale business in Guangzhou for three years. He believes that the incidents were caused in part by a language barrier and cultural misunderstanding. Since this has now been addressed by local government, he feels confident about living and working in Guangzhou.
The representatives of African business community work with CCPIT Guangdong when seeking business opportunities. They believe that communication is the key for Chinese and foreign people to come together to fight against COVID-19.
