Stage adaptation of "Life & Times of Michael K" to meet Guangzhou audiences

The stage play "Life & Times of Michael K," adapted from the Nobel Prize-winning writer J. M. Coetzee's novel of the same name, will be staged at the Guangzhou Opera House on May 16 and 17.

Jointly created by the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa, and the original team of "War Horse" from the Handspring Puppet Company, the drama combines multimedia elements including puppetry, film, and music. It has been widely acclaimed and won the 2023 Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Production and Best Puppetry Design.

"Life & Times of Michael K" tells the story of Michael K, an underprivileged man who goes through an arduous journey from Cape Town to his mother's rural birthplace amid a fictitious civil war. It demonstrates human survival in extreme circumstances and the glimmer of humanity in dire situations.
In 1983, Coetzee received his first Booker Prize for "Life & Times of Michael K." This novel is considered the peak of Coetzee's literary achievement and a shining pearl of South African and world literature.
