Construction on the LEGOLAND Shenzhen Resort in Dapeng New Area has progressed with the completion of the roof of its largest building — Legoland Creativity World.

Of the resort's planned 81 buildings, 57 are under construction. Of those, 38 have already been capped, according to a Shenzhen Special Zone Daily report today.

The 584,000-square-meter development, with a total investment of 6.945 billion yuan (US$968 million), will be exclusively operated by the British company Merlin Entertainments. The project will include a theme park, a water park, and three hotels, according to Siegfried Boerst, its general manager.

The theme park will also have multiple thematic zones, more than 100 rides and attractions, and a theater with a seating capacity more than 1,000, which will stage shows created specifically for local audiences, according to Boerst.

Fiona Eastwood, CEO of Merlin Entertainments, remarked during her visit to Dapeng New Area on Thursday that Dapeng is renowned for its rugged coastlines and stunning sea views, which will endow the new LEGOLAND with a unique charm. With approximately 20 million tourists visiting Dapeng each year, she believes this will also bring a substantial flow of visitors to the resort.

The Dapeng New Area government has attached great importance to the construction of the resort and supporting projects. So far, construction of more than 20 supporting projects around the resort, including rail transit, expressways, hotels, and parks, has been accelerated. These projects are worth a total of 30 billion yuan.

Upon completion, LEGOLAND Shenzhen will be the first international IP-themed family entertainment resort in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area  and the second LEGOLAND in China. The first, LEGOLAND Shanghai, opened Saturday.

LEGOLAND Shanghai, one of 11 parks across the globe, was built with 85 million LEGO bricks.

Among the main attractions in the Shanghai resort is Miniland, which replicates well-known buildings and scenic areas from around the world using LEGO bricks. It features Chinese landmarks, such as Beijing’s Temple of Heaven and Shanghai’s Bund waterfront. There is also a boat tour through a historic Chinese water town built with LEGO bricks.

Tickets range from 319 yuan to 599 yuan for LEGOLAND Shanghai.
