Nanfang Media Group to build China's top-tier mainstream media group

On July 3, Nanfang Media Group (Nanfang Daily) held a mobilization and deployment meeting to advance systemic transformation, aiming to build a top-tier, new-type mainstream media group that excels in both content production and communication, as well as in cultivating all-media talent. The goal is to accelerate efforts to secure a leading position among China's top-tier mainstream media.

At the meeting, a series of new initiatives were launched to drive this transformation: the upgraded South app officially went live; the Nanfang Intelligent Media Development Community was established; a group of converged media brand studios and new media IPs were unveiled; and several experts and special commentators were appointed. These efforts are expected to inject fresh momentum and achieve breakthroughs in the Group's transformation.

The meeting also featured the launch ceremony of the South app. Nanfang Media Group has rebranded and upgraded its previous sector, GDToday, to South, aiming to create a new international communication ecosystem where "everyone can participate, and everyone can share." This initiative seeks to present a real, multidimensional, and comprehensive view of China through the lens of Guangdong.

As part of this comprehensive transformation, Nanfang Media Group will further integrate and optimize its platforms, developing newspapers, websites, mobile apps, social media, and screens as a unified whole. This will further consolidate the Group's role as Guangdong's leading communication platform and as a flagship media outlet for international communication in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

At the meeting, the Nanfang Intelligent Media Development Community Initiative was announced. It aims to enhance the creation, production, and dissemination of major topics and original content, encourage content co-production and sharing of high-quality stories, and establish a unified technical foundation for media integration across the province. A total of 30 municipal and district/county-level converged media centers have become the first member units.

Led by Nanfang Media Group, the Nanfang Intelligent Media Development Community aims to promote "content co-creation, technology sharing, interconnected channels, and collaborative business development." The goal is to integrate Guangdong's mainstream media, foster new productive forces in media development, and envision a new blueprint for systemic transformation in mainstream media.

As one of the major initiatives of the transformation, Nanfang Media Group will implement an All-Media Talent Development Plan and establish cross-media, cross-department, and cross-sector converged media brand studios to create flagship products and top-tier IPs.

The first batch of these 15 brand studios will adopt a flat management structure with the Group's core media resources. At the same time, the initial lineup of 20 new media IPs will focus on breaking news, authoritative updates, international reporting, and in-depth analysis to strengthen the Group's new media products and services.

During the meeting, 13 distinguished guests made a special appearance. Among them, Professor Song Jianwu of the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China and Professor Guo Quanzhong of the School of Journalism and Communication at Minzu University of China were appointed as advisors for this systematic transformation. In addition, Pan Xinmao, a researcher at the PLA Academy of Military Sciences, and Han Xudong, a professor and colonel at the China People's Liberation Army National Defence University, were appointed as special commentators for Nanfang Media Group.
