A reader salon for South was held on July 3 to introduce the development plans as GDToday rebrands as South.
Delegates from 25 consulates general in Guangzhou, foreign chambers of commerce, and the Guangdong International Communication Base, along with 16 South global stringers and business representatives, attended the event to share their wishes towards South.
The new platform aims to strengthen South's role as a key international communication hub for southern China.
"We will further develop South into a flagship media outlet representing the region and connecting with the global community," said Zhao Yang, Editor-in-Chief of South, Nanfang Media Group.
The new logo of South was designed by Cao Xue, the lead designer of the Beijing Winter Olympics mascot Bing Dwen Dwen.
“If you look at the shape of the letter 'S' here, it also resembles the meridians and parallels of the Earth,” explained Cao, “which represents its commitment to global storytelling.”
Foreign diplomats at the event praised South's role in documenting Guangdong's development and expressed strong interest in deepening collaborations.
Italy's Consul General in Guangzhou, Valerio De Parolis, emphasized the outlet's potential to amplify bilateral success stories. "We've maintained close cooperation with GDToday and look forward to sustaining the same high standard with South. We particularly value storytelling that showcases Italy-Guangdong collaboration."
A similar sentiment was expressed by Türkiye's Consul General, Kaan Başkurt, who shared personal experiences with South's coverage. "GDToday has been one of my primary sources for information. I'm confident our collaboration will grow stronger as South expands globally."
