Gathered in just one room in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) are 61 students from GDUFS, Japan’s Ritsumeikan University, and South Korea’s Dongseo University. They are taking a summer class jointly provided by the three universities from July 28th to 31st, where two professors from each country teach the remote classes.

The “China-Japan-South Korea Distance Learning” course constitutes a substantial part of CAMPUS Asia (the Collective Action for Mobility Program of University in Asia). Since 2006, it has been acting as a high-quality platform for teachers and students to communicate on current social issues the history and culture of the three member countries during the summer and winter vacations. This July, Vice Professor Song Wuqiang of the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture of GDUFS took his turn to provide an intriguing lecture on Guangdong merchants’ historical activities in Inchon, South Korea.

In his speech, Mr. Zhu extended his warm welcome to Japanese and South Korean students, and introduced three characteristics of Guangzhou: its combination of tradition and modernization, its convenience, and its openness.

The lecture was followed by a one-day tour of Guangzhou on July 30th. The tour covers Sun Yet-Sen Memorial Hall, dedicated to the great revolutionary; Shamian, the former Western concession; and Yong Qing Fang, an old street full of history. The students were amazed at the charm of the city, and the beauty that lies in the co-existence of traditional European and Chinese architecture.

According to CAMPUS Asia, the upcoming winter lesson is to be held by Ritsumeikan University in Japan.
