Top dragon boat races and spots around Guangzhou

Duanwu Jie, or Dragon Boat Festival falls on June 18th this year. The traditions stemming from this festival include making and eating Zongzi (pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves) and dragon boat racing.

If you’re going to spend the festival in the province, why not join local people in watching the spectacular races all across the PRD?

Guangzhou

1.Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Race

Time: 09:00-13:00, 14:00-16:30, June 23rd

Address: Sun Yat-sen University, Binjiang Dong Rd.(滨江东路) - Guangzhou Bridge section of the Pearl River

Best viewing point: Ersha Island, Binjiang Rd

Ticket: Free

Despite being an old tradition, dragon boat racing culture in Guangzhou has begun to see a rise in popularity among young people and even expats. The International Dragon Boat Race, which has attracted over 30 domestic and international professional teams this year, has become one of the most popular and representative games in Guangzhou.

2. Yangji Village dragon boat race

Time: June 19th

Add.: Northeast side of Guangzhou Bridge over the Pearl River

Ticket: Free

Best viewing point: Riverside below the north side of Guangzhou Bridge

Yangji Village holds traditional dragon boat races every year. It’s also a gathering for the villagers and their relatives. Don’t miss the excellent racing and festivities held by one of the richest villages in Guangzhou!


3. Haizhu Dragon Boat Open Day

Time: 09:00 - 15:00, June 16th-18th

Add.: Haizhu Wetland Park (海珠湿地公园), No. 168, Xinjiao Zhong Rd (新滘中路).

Ticket: 20 RMB

 

On both June 16th and 17th, Dragon Boat Open Day and folk culture activities will be held. Visitors can taste Zongzi and dragon boat tea and biscuits all while sitting in a real dragon boat!

The special event includes:

Water sports - try your hand at Dragon boat paddling

Land games - take part in fitness exercises and games to win prizes

Environment - learn more about our beautiful Pearl River and its environment from local experts

Company stalls – browse companies that are actively interested in fitness, health and the environment, with free offers, games and other activities.

On June 18th, a dragon boat race will be held on the beautiful canals.


4. Lychee Bay (Lizhiwan,荔枝湾) Folk culture show

Time: June 16th to 18th

Add.: Lychee Bay. (Take Metro Line 5 and get off at Zhongshanba Station; exit from B and walk about 800 m to Longjinxi Lu (龙津西路) in the direction of Renwei Temple (仁威庙)

Ticket: Free

There will be an exhibition of four delicate 400-year-old dragon boats from Pantang village. Dragon boat racing and other folk culture events will be held as well.


5.Liede “Parade of the dragons”

Time: June 18th

Add.: Canal near Lieren Fang(猎人坊). Exit A, Liede station

Ticket: Free

Best viewing point: Either side of the Lieren Fang and the riverside in Zhujiang Park and Liedechong (猎德涌).

The traditional “Parade of the dragons” event will be held in Leide during Dragon Boat festival. Lion dance & drumming performances and a flag ceremony would present quite the spectacle!


Foshan

Time: 14:30 - 17:30, June 18-21

Add.: Diejiao (叠窖), Nanhai District, Foshan

Best viewing point: Xiedie Bridge(谢叠大桥)

Neighbouring Foshan also has the time-honoured tradition of dragon boat racing. The curving canal passing under Xiedie Bridge has been considered one the most difficult courses. The race should be a thrilling one!
