What is the Chinese Art “Going Global” Alliance?

The Chinese Art “Going Global” Alliance has been established by Unicorn Publishing Group, Beijing Intron International, and other prominent Chinese arts publishers. As members, contemporary Chinese artists and photographers work with Unicorn Publishing Group and Intron International in publishing, exhibiting, and publicity to further the international influence of Chinese arts.

Why did Unicorn choose Xu Bin Jueyi as the first artist in the Unicorn Chinese Artists Series? Programme director, Intron International’s CEO Zhang Dong, responded to this question in interview.

Q: What do you think is the biggest difficulty for Chinese artists in “going global?” What is the advantage of the Unicorn Chinese Artists Series?

A: The artists of the Unicorn Artists Series are chosen and reviewed by an international panel of judges. We emphasize the artists’ potential, and how likely their art style is to be embraced by the international market. We mainly look for artists of a new generation, who, like the unicorn, are fresh to the world and have great potential that needs to be discovered. We also look at the degree of innovation in their art, the ideas behind it, and whether or not it can resonate with an international audience.

We think that Xu Bin Jueyi’s works reflect all the above-mentioned qualities. His works have a strong religious theme, as represented by the Buddha image. Xu combines the main concepts of Buddhism with elements of other religions, such as Christianity. This makes it is easier for a Western audience to accept and understand his works. The Chinese Buddha image has a very long history, changing its characteristics in different time periods, but broadly reaching a stasis after the Qing Dynasty. Inspired by various different cultures, Xu Bin Jueyi makes bold innovations in creating his Buddhas. While promoting traditional Buddhist culture, he creates a distinctive Buddhist art form, which is also represents a standard in artistic achievement.

Recently, Xu Bin Jueyi met the Minister of Culture in Qatar, for whom he created a portfolio. The portfolio gained popularity among Qataris and has been accepted by the Qatar Museum of Islamic Art. We can see that Xu’s works possess much flexibility to be received and understood by an international audience, and thus we believe that his works can gain a wider reputation at the international level.
