Five-year progress in Guangdong:International perspective

The 19th CPC National Congress is scheduled to start on October 18th of 2017, marking a key point for China’s development.

In the past five years, Guangdong, a southern province neighboring Hong Kong and Macao, implemented important instructions from CPC Central Committee and the Central Government, especially the "Four Insistence, Three Support, Two Pioneering" guidelines instructed by President Xi Jinping on the province's work, and has achieved a lot of progress in economic and social development and attracted enormous international attentions. Many global figures give thumb-ups to Guangdong.

As the pioneer of reform and opening-up nationally, Guangdong will continuously step up the efforts in the supply-side reform, the innovation-driven development strategy, the opening-up, the establishment of a new open economy mechanism in the effort to brave a new scenario of reform, opening-up and modernization.

Supply-side reform

Early in 2016, Guangdong was the first province in China to release a general plan for supply-side reform. The plan deals with five major problems in industrial transformation, such as, over capacity, debt structure imbalance, enterprises’ costs (tax, labor cost and etc).

With a year’s hard work, Guangdong has increased 32.8% of investment in technology upgrade to 389.1 bln yuan while it has lowered enterprises’ costs up to 194 bln yuan.

Innovation

Guangdong has been insisting the innovation-driven strategy and has gained profound achievement in the field. In the past five year, Guangdong has been dedicated to gathering high-tech enterprises and constructing high-quality education institutes.

Besides, Guangdong continued to increase its R&D input. Patent applications reached 150.6 thousand in 2016, which doubled the number in 2012.

Cisco signed an MoU with Guangdong in 2016, and invested huge in the Smart City Project in Panyu of Guangzhou as well as the Tonghu Science City in Huizhou this year in 2017.

Opening-up

As the pilot province of opening-up, Guangdong always applies an open mind-set to its development and is actively participating in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Delta and the cooperation with “Belt and Road” countries.

At present, Guangdong has 47 sister provinces from 38 countries, and a total of 60 countries have their consulate general in Guangzhou.

Guangdong has become a major market for New Zealand’s export, and about 25% of New Zealand’s food and beefs export come to Guangdong. Also Guangdong is a major export international frontier for New Zealand’s healthy products.

Culture

Guangdong is also famous for its cultural diversity, with a special cultural style marveling the world. In the past five years, the province’s cultural industry and cultural export have gained astonishing speed and caught eyes globally.

In 2016, the import and export volume of Guangdong’s cultural products reached 43.79 billion USD with the export volume amounted to 41.81 billion USD, ranking first in all provinces of the country with a trade surplus of 39.83 billion USD.

We have lots of opportunities to promote different parts. For example in Guangdong, you have Lingnan culture; pre-historic museum of dinosaurs, the Hakka culture and so many things that can rely on those to attract tourists. So I think you do have the bases to do promotion for attracting a lot of tourists, including from my country.” More

I went to the foot of Baiyun Mountain before starting to design. My eyes were full of various trees and flowers, and my ears full of birds’ singing. It was not so easy to hear birds’ singing in the urban area! This trip inspire me to design a streamline shape for the roof as if Baiyun Mountain stretched here.” More
