“Made in Guangdong” brands achieve worldwide recognition and attract expats to pursue dreams

Aly played with his daughters.

Baby Aly Sidy, shared the following with us: “There is an old saying that ‘you get what you pay for’ and Guangdong’s products have gained a high reputation in Africa and beyond with their supreme quality!” Over the past eight years in Guangdong, Baby Aly has established his own trading company which has boomed into a successful cross-border e-commerce business.

He has settled in Guangzhou and has two lovely daughters here. “Guangzhou is my second home town”, he said joyfully, “here, I can be myself and do what I love to do .”

Free circulation of goods, talent and an expansive market help more foreigners to settle in Guangdong happily and peacefully:

E-commerce via Internet has delivered “global commerce”, bringing new opportunities to foreign businessmen. There is a continuous optimization of expat oriented services and more frequent exchange programs are being conducted. Foreign artists are enjoying a golden age in the development of Guangdong because of the prosperity of multicultural markets.

I have been almost everywhere in the Pearl River Delta

“With a smart phone, you can go anywhere and buy anything in China. It is really user-friendly!” said Aly taking his cell phone out of his pocket to pay for a cup of coffee.

Over the past eight years in China, Aly has immersed himself in the local community. He even brought his family over here to settle down. He said:“ Guangzhou is my second home town. I can be myself and do what I love.” Now, Aly has his own trading company working in the cross-border e-commerce business.

“Chinese goods are very popular in Mali!” Aly explained that with the rise of the Chinese economy, products made in Guangdong and other coastal provinces account for an increasing percentage of the market in Africa. With a strong business environment and as foreign trade hub, the Pearl River Delta has become a perfect place for many Africans to pursue their dreams.

At present, Aly’s company conducts on-line procurement and on-line delivery via e-commence platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba, and JD.com. It delivers more targeted services to overseas customers through global logistics.

Guangdong public hospital welcomes their first foreign doctor

Abraham Morse is having a regular check on the patient.

In 1986, Abraham Morse visited China from America. This short trip played a critical role in his important choice two decades later on his professional career. In 2016, he joined Guangzhou Women and Children Hospital’s Medical Center as the director of Urology and Gynecology Department. He is the first foreign doctor to hold a management position in a public hospital in Guangdong.

Morse finds time to teach research methods and professional English every day. He considers it important for local doctors to be able to understand English language journals and write papers in English. “They can submit their papers to high quality international journals and make it easier for the hospital to become successful as an international medical center.”

“I love China and appreciate Chinese people’s attitude to life. They work very hard and value education a lot.” On Abraham’s desk there are many kinds of Chinese tea, and he commented:“ I like the taste of different Chinese teas. Everything here is amazing!”

At present, he works at the outpatient clinic every week and conducts surgical and academic training in the department as well. “I enjoy working and living here.” Morse said that Guangzhou makes him feel at home, and hoped that he would have the opportunity to be a part of things here for many years to come.

Build a bridge connecting Guangdong with the world

Justin and his paintings.

Justin Ole Fischer thinks that he knows Guangzhou better than some of his local friends . He said:“When I first came here, I got on the buses at weekends, going from one end to another and then coming back, just looking at the city.”

He is an Australian painter who has set up his studio in Nansha, Guangzhou. His paintings are bold, bright and attention grabbing. Taking a closer look in his paintings, you can see hints of Cantonese inspiration: Lychees, Qilou (arcade houses) and fishermen's hats.

He says that Guangzhou offers high quality but competitive pigments and materials, and that “Art Canton”, an art project established in 2010, provides a platform for artists to approach a broader range of art buyers. “I got to know many foreign artists because of Art Canton. I’m also building up my Linkedin network. Now I’m connected to almost ten thousand people including artists, professors, government officials and staff from the world’s major art institutions.”

“I can act as a bridge and allow Guangdong and countries which are interested in Guangdong open up to each other, boosting exchange between artists,” Justin said.

Wale Oloko, the Consul-General of Nigeria in Guangzhou.

According to Wale Oloko, the Consul-General of Nigeria in Guangzhou “Guangdong has become the region to establish the most close connection and solid foundation for cooperation between China and Africa in economy and trade.” At present, ten African countries have opened a Consulate-General post in Guangzhou.

Nigeria, the largest economy in Africa, sits along the Belt and Road. It is China’s largest project contracting market, second largest export market, third trading partner and main investment destination in Africa.

Each year, over 70,000 Nigerians come to Guangzhou for business, travel, political affairs and other activities. Most of them are businessmen in foreign trade. “No matter whether you go to Shenzhen, Foshan or Dongguan, you will definitely see Africans there purchasing electronics, furniture and tiles.” Oloko explained that the business opportunities in Guangdong are huge, and now with direct flights between Guangzhou and many African countries, it is relatively easier to travel between the two places.

Big events in reform

1. Guangdong’s ten measures on foreign investment and revised edition

The business registration service “Bank Securities Link” (Yinzhengtong in Chinese) is expanded to the countries and regions along the Belt and Road. It means that overseas investors can conduct business registration in local country, region or by remote.

2.Pre-establishment national treatment and negative list management mode

To implement the reform of integrating business certifications and licenses into one consolidated business license and to “handle commerce record and business registration via one counter” for the foreign invested enterprises which are not in the negative list. To reduce the time of registering a foreign-invested enterprise to 5 working days.

3.“Single window” system for international trade

In 2017, Guangdong took the lead to fully implement “single window” system for international trade in all prefecture-level cities, reducing the time of goods clearance to 9.8 hours. This year, “single window” system for international trade shall be copied and promoted at all ports in the whole province, and to reduce the time of goods clearance by a third.
