During the launching ceremony, Xie Ming, Deputy Director of Nansha Free Trade Zone Management Committee, said Nansha is focusing on the development of AI industry and he hopes AI companies could participate in the district’s construction in such fields as medical service, transportation and urban management.

“Nansha is relatively new and better in digitalization and data collection. In the next step, we plan to open government data, urban management data and more application scenarios to the AI companies in the district,” said Xie Ming, “earlier in February, we enabled Pony.ai to organize public road tests, and now it has been one of the very first self-driving vehicle companies that obtained the T3 license (road test license) in China.”

Xie Xiaohui, Director-General of Nansha Bureau of Investment and Trade Promotion, added that Nansha offered the 16 AI companies a total of 150 million yuan (about $21.6) after a comprehensive appraisal. “The settlement of the first batch of AI companies is a milestone to further attract related companies in the future. We also hope to create an integrated ecology to boost communication and cooperation among these companies,” he said.

According to Guangzhou International Institute of Artificial Intelligence, it plans to introduce the second batch of 47 AI companies to the building and has 30 companies lining up for application. The institute will assess these companies’ technological ability and achievement with international standards.

NovuMind is one of the 16 signed companies and is dedicated to the R&D of AI calculation chip. Xie Qiang, Vice President of NovuMind, said the company has branches in U.S., Beijing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. “AI chip has to be tested for different scenarios before being put into use. Our Nansha branch will be responsible to connect our technology with scenarios as the district could cover thousands of millions of SMEs in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and the whole South China market,” he said.
