Italians formidable in Tour of China Hengqin competition

Cyclists in the 2018 Tour of China reached their penultimate and next-to-last stop Sept 20 on Hengqin Island. Seid Lizede from Italian pro cycling team Androni Giocattoli finished first by clocking 1:53:51.

Michael Freiberg of Australia's Bennelong Swisswellness Cycling (BSC) took second place and Jacopo Mosca of Italian Wilier Triestina came in third.

Totaling 92 km (57 miles), the eight-lap course along 11.5 km (7 miles) runs from Hengqin Avenue to Niujiaokeng and started and terminated at Hengqin International Tennis Center.

Tour of China Hengqin stage

Owners of the four honorary jerseys remained unchanged after the Hengqin stage. The Anthony Giacoppo team continues to hold the yellow and blue jerseys for the leader and best sprinter.

Christfer Robin Jurado Lopez from Trevigiani Phonix Hemus retains the polka-dot jersey as the best climber, while Jiang Zhihui from Mitchelton-Bike exchange keeps the white jersey as the best rider in Greater China.

Founded in 2010, the prestigious event now ranks first in Asia and fourth in the world, second only to the Tours de France, Spain, and Italy.

After leaving Sichuan Province's Chengdu on Sept 8, cyclists have been dashing through multiple challenging stages in Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, and Guangdong. They progressed on to the final stage in Anshun of Guizhou on Sept 22 and 23.
