Super typhoon 'Mangkhut' to make landfall in Guangdong this weekend

According to the National Meteorological Center, super typhoon ‘Mangkhut’ is expected to make landfall in Guangdong on September 16th. It was named after the mangkhut fruit from Thailand due to its outer shape and is the 22nd typhoon recorded this year so far.

Typhoon 'Mangkhut' is expected to be this year’s strongest typhoon. Winds at the core of the storm are level-17 or higher, with the typhoon predicted to continue to intensify.

According to Guangdong Meteorological Observatory, 'Mangkhut' will make landfall in Western Guangdong on Sunday night.

The forecast is so bad that even the Shenzhen Weather account on Weibo is advising potential travelers not to visit the city of Shenzhen: “Please be safe and don’t come to Shenzhen, even though we love eating mangkhut. Thank you"

China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd has stopped selling tickets for Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail, Shenzhen-Hangzhou high-speed rail, Guangzhou-Shenzhen intercity train, Guangzhou-Zhuhai intercity train and for all trains from Hunan Province to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai from September 16th to 18th.

What is the concept of a category 17 typhoon?

When a category 17 typhoon hits, trees and toppling and sometimes swept from their roots into the sky.

Houses and other buildings can get totally destroyed, with the roofs of some brick houses lifted or collapsed. Cars can also be expected to fly around town - in a nutshell, it’s a disaster!

According to Xinhua News Agency, Hong Kong estimates 'Mangkhut' will be more powerful than all of the super typhoons Hong Kong has experienced in decades, including the notorious 1962 Super Typhoon Wanda that left heavy casualties, as well as Super Typhoon Hato that triggered the highest-level typhoon warning signal last year. It is predicted to be closest to Hong Kong on Sunday while maintaining its intensity at the level of a super typhoon, bringing adverse weather to the city.
